DIY Christmas – Glass Ornament Decoupage

So I’m at it again, this time it’s glass ornaments I’ve had lying around forever. A few years back I found a pin on Pinterest showing old book pages being decoupaged to glass ornaments and I thought that would be pretty cool…until I tried it. In theory, it should have worked, but in reality it didn’t. Why? The old book pages were too thick to adhere to the glass bulb, so I tossed the idea aside until recently when I was cleaning out a cabinet in my office and came across the ornaments again. An idea struck me and that’s where it all started.

To begin with I gathered up the remaining glass ornaments.

Then the supplies of decoupage glue, tissue paper and glitter of course.

I cut my tissue paper into strips and then into smaller squares or rectangles.

I then pulled the ornament hanger clip off and found a straw to help hold it upright while I coated the glass bulb with the decoupage glue. FYI – your fingers will get coated with the glue and glitter.

Once the bulb was completely coated, I then applied strips of the tissue paper randomly over the surface ensuring it was completely covered. You will overlap the tissue, it’s all good in the end, I promise.

As I applied the tissue paper I spread more of the decoupage over the tissue paper to smooth it down.

Once it was completely covered in the tissue paper, I then sprinkled on some glitter because everyone needs a little bling in their life! Okay, besides needing bling in your life, I did it so it would sparkle when the Christmas tree lights and sunlight hit them.

Once dry, I then reattached the ornament hanging clip to the top and smiled at my creation.

Pretty cute, right?

And how do they look on the tree? Well, you tell me…

I liked them so much I grabbed some mini silver ornaments I’d used in the past and decoupaged them too!

Some made it to the tree while others became table top ornament decorations.

Makes you want to repurpose some of your old ornaments, doesn’t it?

Toodles!

My bling scarf!

Yes, I always look crabby in pics where I don’t smile. It’s a curse I tell you!

Alright, I already admitted I have a thing for scarves and boots. I posted a pic last week of me in my “fall attire”, boots, and scarf. Because I have a thing for scarves, I have a bunch, too many in my hubby’s opinion. But what does his opinion on scarves matter anyway?

So I was at Jo-Ann’s this past week picking up some ribbon for a future blog posting about leg warmers when I came across these really cute jersey knit scarves that had scarf rings on them. They were what you would call infinity scarves, and they already had the scarf rings attached. See, what you do is purchase the scarf and then buy the “bling” as extra. You can change the bling out, and well that got me to thinking…why buy another scarf to take up more room in the closet when I could make my own bling scarf with the stuff I already had at home?

An idea was born.

I didn’t have any scarf rings at home that were large enough for a scarf to manageably fit through it, so I did have to purchase some…okay, I cheated and just bought some jewelry charms. They were large enough and fit the bill, they were also 40% off. I think I picked them up for about $2.50, and eight came with the package. Plenty enough for me! The next purchase was the actual scarf ring that had the clip on the bottom to attach the bling to them. Those were a little bit more at $3.60 for two. Later when I got home I did some online searching and found Amazon carried them and so did Esty. Here’s the link for a 12 piece set, and another to the 18 piece set. I ordered both of these for future scarf blinging. Yeah, I said blinging. lol

Anyway, it’s super easy to make your own. Just a few steps really. The most difficult part was making the decision on how many rings to put on the scarf itself!

Step one:

Slide rings onto your favorite scarf.

Step two:
Slide larger scarf ring on that will hold the actual bling.
Step three:
Tie the ends of your scarf together to make and infinity scarf.
Step four:
Slide larger bling holding ring between the knotted ends.
Step five:
Attach bling.
Step six:
Wear that beautiful blingy scarf and let the world see just how creative you truly are!
